The Friendship Bread Book and Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society IntroductionI'
![]() | |
| I'd like to introduce you to 2 incredible novels by Darien Gee |
"In the quiet community of Avalon, Illinois, Julia Evarts wonders how to move on with her life. Though her husband and five-year-old daughter give her an abundance of love, Julia still reels from a tragedy that has left her estranged from the sister who was once her best friend. Meanwhile, across town, widow Madeleine Davis takes great pleasure in serving up delectable treats and cozy comforts at her tea salon—now, if only she had some customers to enjoy them. And famed concert cellist and recent Avalon transplant Hannah de Brisay finds herself at a crossroads when her career and marriage come to abrupt ends. The three strangers forge a friendship at Madeleine’s Tea Shop, and soon their camaraderie extends to everyone in Avalon in the guise of a unique and wonderful gift. But even as Julia becomes ever closer to her new friends, she realizes the profound necessity of confronting the painful past she shares with her sister.
Life and loss, friendship and community, food and family: Friendship Bread tells a spirited, remarkably moving tale about the triumph of hope."
I usually send this book to my GOOD friends in real life. I make the starter in a jar with a lid and give that to them and they usually give me a piece of the bread that they made with the starter! The book is expensive but you can find some good deals online when you search for them!
The Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society: A Novel
"Perfect for fans of Debbie Macomber, Kristin Hannah, Beth Hoffman, and Kate Jacobs, this luminous novel from the author of Friendship Bread follows a
group of fascinating women who form deep friendships through their love
of scrapbooking—as memories are preserved, dreams are shared, and
surprising truths are revealed.
Welcome to Avalon, Illinois, Pop. 4,243
At
Madeline’s Tea Salon, the cozy hub of the Avalon community, local
residents scrapbook their memories and make new ones. But across town,
other Avalonians are struggling to free themselves of the past: Isabel
Kidd is fixing up her ramshackle house while sorting through the
complications of her late husband’s affair. Ava Catalina is mourning the
love of her life and helping her young son grow up without his father.
Local plumber Yvonne Tate is smart, beautiful, and new to Avalon, but
finds that despite a decade of living life on her own terms, the past
has a way of catching up—no matter where she goes. And Frances Latham,
mother to a boisterous brood of boys, eagerly anticipates the arrival of
a little girl from China—unprepared for the emotional roller coaster of
foreign adoption.
Enter Bettie Shelton, the irascible founder
of the Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society. Under Bettie’s guidance,
even the most reluctant of Avalon’s residents come to terms with their
past and make bold decisions about their future. But when the group
receives unexpected news about their steadfast leader, they must pull
together to create something truly memorable.
By turns humorous, wise, and deeply moving, The Avalon Ladies Scrapbooking Society is a luminous reminder that the things we hold most dear will last a lifetime."
“In
a gathering of women there will always be compelling stories. Throw in a
love of craft and these stories take on a whole new dynamic. There are
shared secrets, support, encouragement, and love as the Avalon Ladies
come to terms with the past and boldly step forward into the future.”—#1
New York Times bestselling author Debbie Macomber
I am a scrapbooking gal! I love to do all kinds of scrapbooks. I'm presently working on my dog scrapbook for my dog Sandie and I have won contests at my (then) local scrapbook store that I did in crops! Well this is probably foreign language but on Thursday I will show you some pages I have done and pages I have won awards for and then the scrapbook that John (my husband) and I are working on in memory of my Mother In Law. I will also share with you the story of how I taught my Mother In Law to do scrapbooking and show you pages from her books! She has MANY! I'm so glad that I have them now that she is no longer with us. She has outdone me in the number of scrapbooks completed. While she was scrapping at her home, I was working on local contests and crops that I made up for our group of women.
Questions: Have you ever read either of those two books? Is there one that you would like to read or share with someone else to read? Are you a scrapbooker? Do you know any scrappers?

It's very hard to tell people I can't do things due to my Chronic Illnessess/Diseases
Right now I am at at 10-20. I would say that I fall into a 15 if it were on the chart above! I am have severe symptoms and am in bed about 17 hours a day! I was able to leave the house for 1 day this week which was yesterday and there was one day when I was hardly able to get online for more than 1/2 hr at a time and rest for two hours between the segments of 1/2 hours. And that was for a total of 2 hours. Most of it was LIKING pictures and groups I didn't belong to yet about Fibromyalgia and Chronic Illness/Disease. I am stopping right here to take a 1 hour break from the computer. I will most likely need to take the pain pill if I wish to continue on the computer today doing the things I need to get done today and for that to be done I will need to be on no longer that 1/2 hour at a time (even with the pain pill).

Rest Ministries has shared:
“What strength do I have, that I should still hope? What prospects, that I should be patient? (Job 6:11)
One of the most problematic issues for people with disabilities and chronic illnesses is the “expectations game.” It is this endless game we can never win. When others, and even ourselves, have continued unrealistic expectations about our abilities, it often leads to disappointment and even discouragement.
I have tried hard to be realistic about my abilities and limitations due to illness. Yet like most of you, I want to believe I can do more, and accomplish more in spite of my illness than is often possible. I want to make promises, agree to do things that are often out of my reach because of illness. And when we make promises we cannot keep, we end up disappointing others and ourselves.
We are eager to please others, we want the approval of others, yet when we can’t meet their expectations, they become angry, we become angry, and we may even feel guilty, and no one is pleased with the outcome.
Perhaps one of the hardest things with our disabilities is to simply say: “I’m sorry, but I can’t do that.” Honesty may not make everyone happy, but you cannot afford to make promises your disability is unable to keep.
Jesus tells us that “the truth shall set you free” (John 8:23). And though it may not make everyone happy, including ourselves, I believe truth and honesty about our abilities is a much better policy that “wishful thinking” that will surely disappoint.
Friends, we must be honest about our illnesses, even when it may not be what others want to hear.
Truth is a better, more sure standard, to live by than unreasonable optimism. Let us be hopeful, let us push our limits where we can, but let us also be honest and truthful when it comes to our illness and abilities, and then let God take care of the rest.
Prayer: Dear Lord, how we hate our limitations, but let us always be honest about them. Amen.

MM: Successful Couples and The 5 Love Languages
Motivational Monday!
What do you think makes up successful couples? Is it in the way that they tell you they are in private? Is it in the way you observe them in public? Let's take a look at this from an article on Huffpost!
This is a book that I'm going to be reading and sharing with you throughout the rest of August-til we finish it! I'll cover it on a couple of days a week. Looking forward to your input in the comments!
Background: My husband and I started these books because, guess what? We are married for 16 years now and we still struggle in communication and meeting each others needs. We have a really stable loving marriage and my husband is the best in the world, but even we have these struggles. So I bought 2 of these books, the ones for the men for John and the one you see in the picture for me!
Throughout the blog entries, I'm going to be sharing tables and graphs and pictures and I hope you will contact me at anytime at carolyncavies@yahoo.com if you want me to slow down some or have a question for me. If I can't answer it, I will find someone in the Marriage Family Counseling world that can!
On the left-hand side of the grid are the 5 Love Languages and then the rest of the grid is there to give you examples of each and an explanation.
Comments please? I look forward to hearing anything you have to say about the books, the languages, successful couples, etc... Thanks so much!
What do you think makes up successful couples? Is it in the way that they tell you they are in private? Is it in the way you observe them in public? Let's take a look at this from an article on Huffpost!
By Victor M. Parachin for YourTango.com
Over lunch with a friend one day, Kevin was asked about the "secret of your obviously happy and healthy love relationship."
Kevin responded, "I married a wonderful woman and made the commitment to apply myself to the relationship with the same energy that I place into other important areas of my life: school, work, health, friendships. I didn't want to be casual about the relationship nor take it for granted. My partner has pretty much done the same thing. Consequently, we make a great team. I can't imagine being without her."
Highly successful couples like Kevin and his wife know that making the relationship a top priority is vital. They don't allow it to derail. They know the ingredients that are necessary to keep each other content, happy, healthy and satisfied. To put it simply, philosopher Paul Tillich observed, "Any deep relationship to another human being requires watchfulness and nourishment."
So listen up: Here are the 10 secrets of highly successful couples:
1. Successful couples enjoy each other. It's just that simple. They like to be together, talk together, do things together. Former Beatle Ringo Starr has been married to his wife Barbara for more than three decades. He says the "secret" to the couple's longevity is this: "I'm just blessed that she puts up with me. I love the woman. She loves me. There are less down days than up, and we get on really well. We spend a lot of time together. That's the deal."
2. Successful couples fight skillfully. "In conflict, be fair and generous," is wisdom from The Tao. When two people live together, they are bound to have differences of opinion and disagreements. Successful couples fight but do it skillfully; in a way that leaves the relationship stronger, not weaker. One technique they employ is their choice of words. For example, University of California (Berkeley) researchers looked at "connected" couples and discovered that they tend to use plural pronouns ("we", "us" and "ours") rather than singular pronouns ("I", "me" and "mine"). As a result, they were less likely to feel stressed out after the disagreement than couples who used singular pronouns. "Using 'we language' during a fight helps couples align themselves on the same team, as opposed to being adversaries," notes lead author Benjamin Seider.
3. Successful couples seek and offer forgiveness. They may not forgive and forget, but they do forgive and let it go. When they have done something wrong or hurtful, they offer an apology. When they are the wronged party, they accept the gift of an apology. Successful couples travel the pathway toward forgiving, which is outlined by author Clarissa Pinkola Estes, who cites these four stages for arrival at complete forgiveness:
-- Forgo: Take a break from thinking about the person or event for a while.
-- Forebear: Abstain from punishing, neither thinking about it nor acting on (the offense) in small or large ways. Give a bit of grace to the situation.
-- Forget: Refuse to dwell; let go and loosen one's hold, particularly on memory. To forget is an active -- not passive -- endeavor.
-- Forgive: Make a conscious decision to cease to harbor resentment, which includes forgiving a debt and giving up one's resolve to retaliate."

SHARED POST: DIY Laundry Soap
Homemade Laundry Soap!!
Sick of buying laundry soap?? Me too. This stuff is awesome because it
is way stronger then the store bought laundry soap. You only have to use
1 Tablespoon per load. This recipe makes a huge cookie jar full of soap
and is going to last a life time, well maybe not quit that long. I
originally made mine in July and I still have a ton and I do at least 8
loads of laundry ever week. So I am thinking it will last me almost a
year. 1 year of laundry soap for less than $20, have I got you sold yet?
I love not having to buy laundry soap all the time anymore. This laundry soap also works just fine in HE washers.
Update: **I just ran out of laundry soap and it is March. So July to
March that's 9 months of laundry soap for $20 bucks. I am pretty happy
about that.**
Here is what you need:
1 4 lb box Arm & Hammer Baking Soda (1.81 kg) found in the cooking isle
1 box Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda 55 oz (3 lb 7 oz) found in the detergent isle
3 bars of Fels-Naptha soap, found in the detergent isle (if you use Zote
bars use 2 bars instead, Zote can be found at Home Depot)
2 small containers of Oxy Clean or store brand Oxy Clean (try to get about 3.5 lbs total (1.58 kg)) found in the detergent isle.
(this is optional, I added it into mine because I have pretty messy kids and the cleaner the better)
You should be able to find all of these items at your grocery store.
You should be able to find all of these items at your grocery store.
**Use 1-2 Tablespoons per load. I know that does not seem like enough but this recipe does not have fillers like the store bought detergent so you only need 1-2 Tablespoons.**
This detergent is fairly mild smelling, it is not over powering. If you love a strong scent you may have to add a fabric softener or laundry crystals to each load. You can find laundry crystals in the detergent isle.
**Don't worry the Fels-Naptha will dissolve in your washer even if you only use cold water like me.**
about 2 gallons worth of detergent. Walmart has large glass jars in the kitchen department.
I used a jar that my sister gave me a few years ago from a little home
good store. Then used my Cricut to cut out the word Laundry to put on
the front of the jar. I keep it above my washing machine, I also got a
little scoop that is about 1 tablespoon to keep inside. Wasn't that
easy? Sure was! Enjoy your soap.
**If
you are going to copy my recipe and blog about it please add a link
back to my blog. Give credit where credit is due. It would be very
appreciated. Thanks:)**
**Update** I have had a lot of repeat questions so I though I would answer a few here.
-This detergent is safe for HE washers. Just make sure to great your bar soap very fine.
The detergent should be added to the barrel instead of the dispenser.
-This detergent is safe to use on sensitive skin.
-It does not have a strong scent, you can add laundry crystals to the batch to add fragrance.
-Some of my followers have used other bar soap instead of Zote or Fels-Naptha. I have personally not tried it but from the feed back I get it sounds like any bar will work.
-Use 1-2 Tablespoons per load.
-Walmart has nice big glass jars in the kitchen department!
-This is not safe for cloth diapers because it contains baking soda which affects how the diaper is able to soak up liquid. Or so I have been told. You may want to do your own research on this.
-I am not sure if this detergent is safe for a septic tank or not. I have had plenty of comments from people who have septic tanks and they say that this detergent works just fine.
- I used my Cricut to cut out the vinyl letters for the jar. I used the Story Book font.

SUGGESTED METHOD AS WELL:
Normally I use Tide. I like it b/c my clothes/sheets always come out clean as well as soft. But lately at Tide costing between $10 - $12 it just seemed a little outrageous. I am such a scatter-brain all the time I normally forget to use coupons, so DIY stuff is a better option for me. Honestly what can they put in detergent that would make it so much better than you can make yourself. Through Pinterest I found a great DIY recipe for Laundry Soap, that I have been using for a few weeks now and notice very little difference. My sheets are just as fresh smelling and soft as when I used Tide.
Instructions
Ingredients:
1 cup of Borax
1 cup of Washing Soda
1 bar of soap (any kind)
Hand Grater
Step 1. In a large bowl, using the small site of the grater, grate the entire bar of soap. I should be fairly fine
Step 2. To the bar of soap, add the borax and the washing soda.
Step 3: Mix thoroughly. I stirred mine for 3 - 5 minutes.
I
put my finished soap in an old blue Atlas canning jar with a tablespoon
measuring spoon. I use between 1 - 2 scoops per load depending on how
large the load is. I let the washer fill a little then add the soap and
then let it continue to fill to make sure the soap dissolves well. It
won't be sudsy but it still cleans great!
1 box of borax and 1 box of washing soda will make several loads of detergent, for less than $10.
The finished project:

Please comment about your favorite Laundry Soap and why you use it and then please tell me if after reading this and seeing that various pictures, if you would consider making your own or just using coupons to continue using your favorite detergent.
Next: I'm going to blog about using the Planet Saving items to make a detergent because that's really where I want to go! If you have a recipe for that, please post the link in your comment, thank you! This is what I have so far to link to:

Stop the PUSH to SUCCEED NOW and let everyone grow in their own timing!
![]() |
| Don't PUSH ME because I will PUSH back! |
I do think that there are people who are trying to start their own business who DO need the push and inspiration and follow-up and that place is definitely a life coach or motivational speaker. But not for me.
Sure, I sell Scentsy! I am presently being taught by my peers and my Director and groups that help you online. I even found online videos on Youtube that help you. I can sell and learn more about the products part-time and keep my family first and keep my first focus on succeeding in being a wife and a step mother. I don't push my friends to buy from me... they will push back and say that they don't have any money but thank you for the freebies. "They smell great but I just can't do this now because..." And they are right to have their answer and I don't have the right to try to push anything on them.
I'm a believer (God comes first in everything) and I am a wife second (my husband comes before anyone else) and I am a step mom (those young men mean the world to me) and in within these great calls to life I work with my husband (he is retired and we make it from pay check to pay check) Oh! I'm a DOG MOM and that comes along with my step sons. I don't have to financially support my step sons but I do have to support my dog. And so that is what Scentsy is for. Having the money in savings for her in case she needs anything. She is 11 years old and thriving!
There are many roads I have open to me and when the TIME IS RIGHT I will be making moves in the direction that the Lord and John (my husband) tell me to go. And in that decision process will always be my physical condition and working with what I can do and not be able to do (due to stress).
There are life coaches that I totally love that I've met through UBC with the 31 day challenge of writing everyday in your blog. They are the ones that speak the truth from their heart and are totally REAL with you. Others, they get you with something FREE and then try to sell you their program, classes and books at an outrageous price for the middle to low earning people.
When someone doesn't think through the process when not reading the words of the coach or motivational speaker they go to their last resources for money: family or savings or even 401K's and then they feel guilt later on, especially if they don't make money the first year (or even first month).
This is a plea to my friends who are or are not mom's to think through the decision of whether to go through with the life coach or motivational speaker or even tv personalities that tell you that they had hardships, etc... Talk to your parents, your significant other, your grown adult children. Make a time table for the days of the week and write in all you have to do and then plan the time for the class, course or book. Then after it is over do the same process and pray (if you believe) or meditate. Whatever you believe in. And don't start if you have the least bit of hesitation.
My sister and her husband work really hard at their jobs and she realized that she only had time to sell Mary Kay part-time. She sells to her friends and online clients and family. I hope I can get some freebies from her now that I quit Avon and just stick with my Scentsy.

The above 20 permission statements came from my fibromyalgia group (a disease that I've had for 18 years now). I'm being treated and attend therapy sessions. This is my disability and it has its painful and life altering effects on me and millions of others. You can read about it here if you have never read about it before now. http://chronicfatigue.about.com/od/whatisfibromyalgia/a/understandfibro.htm
I would love to read comments of opinion and sharing if you are a chronic pain sufferer like me. Also feel free to disagree with anything that I've written here and write your own opinion, thanks!
Unofficially Day 10!
I've missed days due to pain and staying in bed on heat and also walking it out. I live at the beach so the best part of the day is walking in the early morning with my husband and dog. There are lots of blog entries about Sandie and my husband and what we do at the beach if you use the SEARCH section on the left-hand side bar. Have a great weekend!
