Date Night or Family Night or Just for Fun Night/Weekend

John (my husband and best friend) and I found these Monster Rocks on Pinterest and wanted to adapt it to be our own idea and so we are working this coming week on making Patriotic Shells.   I will post the pictures here during the week after the weekend.  We're vacationing and getting this done when we return home on Monday, July 8th 2013.

Monster Rocks are good because they give you time to enjoy your child/ren's creations.  There are no rules, there are all winners and there is self expression.

Here are the directions:

How to Make a Monster Out of a Rock

From , former About.com Guide

Blue Rock Monster Craft

Follow these directions and make a not-so-scary monster using a rock, paint, and a few craft supplies.

  • Age Guideline: 3 Years and Up
  • Time Required: 30 minutes (Does not include drying time)
The above age and time guidelines are estimates. This project can be modified to suit other ages and may take more or less time depending on your circumstances.

Materials Needed:

  • Rock
  • Paint
  • Wiggle Eyes
  • Pom-pom
  • Craft Glue
  • Paint Brush
  • Scissors
Instructions:
Start out by searching for a rock. The rock can be any size or shape you like, you just might want to make sure it can sit up the way you want it to. Clean the rock and dry it completely.
Paint the rock whatever color you want your monster to be. Bright colors work wonderfully! It may take a few coats of paint. Let the paint dry.

Glue two wiggle eyes onto the head. I think it added a little more character to my monster to use 2 different sized eyes. Use paint to make any other features you want such as a mouth, nostrils, etc. You can also use any other craft supplies you have to make these features. For the monster's hair, I cut a small pom-pom almost in half and glued it to the top of the monster's head.

John and I do not have easy access to rocks.  Our beach does not deposit rocks, so we are going to use shells since we live at the beach and so do our neighbors!  After they are done drying we are taking them to our neighbors to give them something patriotic for the month and summer and ready for Labor Day!  Yes, it's horrible to say but that day is coming soon.

The Pinterest article suggested taking the finished products that you have for sharing (Pay It Forward) and have them in a container and allow your child and yourself to place the rocks anywhere except in the middle of a sidewalk or driveway.  You don't want people or pets to be injured by stepping on them or over them.  I love Pay It Forward so I am all for this project.  How about you?  Which way would you paint?  Your child or companion paint?

Thank you for taking the time to learn about a craft and for submitting comments!  The comments are posted after I am able to read them and allow them on the page.  Thanks for your patience!

How fun and I love Paying It Forward. We just moved into a new neighborhood would be a fun way to meet the neighbors as I could leave them on the porch with a invite to come between this time to have a snack.

Love the idea of this. My children are all grown up but did a lot of crafts and family nights with them. Enjoy your children as 18 years goes by way too fast. Thanks for sharing. Anita

I'm so glad you all love this idea! I love your ideas that you all are going to do with them! Our children are young adult men now and so John and I do this together... I think we'll leave an open invite for them to come to TEA! (and coffee or cold beverage) I like to share about Pinterest with people who don't use the computer as much as I do. So I will probably take one of the recipes that I have from my Pinterest board and make it: http://pinterest.com/califbeachgal/holidays/
