Nail Art of Halloween 2013

I can't see paying $25.00 - $35.00 for having my nails decorated for any event but especially not for Halloween!  I have the most fun throughout the month of October with doing my own nails.

I have to say that while I was an Avon Gal I became totally addicted to nails and nail polish and so I bought at all of the sales and have been adding different brands since then.  I buy nail art and get ideas from the Internet and FaceBook and Pinterest.

I'm going to be sharing these various "keeps" that  I have for doing nails.  And today I bring you an article about the 25 Clever Halloween Nail Ideas from BuzzFeed!  I totally love that place!

Here is the article with the following pictures being shown and so much more!    http://www.buzzfeed.com/alannaokun/ween-nails

Some of these are so easy to do!  From amateur to pro.  Continue to the article about the 25 Clever Nail Ideas for Halloween to see all the pictures and directions!

How many of you would enter a nail contest here for Halloween?  This would one of a number of pages of ideas for what to do.  The only rule is that you have to do it yourself and you only need one hand for your photo!

This challenge will begin on this THURSDAY, Oct. 17th, 2013 for the 13 Nail Days of Halloween!  You can write to me at califbeachgal@fastmail.fm for the exact link that I will send on that day!

The 13 Days of Halloween Giveaway to go with the contest will offer 3 prizes in 3 levels:

1.  Beginner Winner:        Nail Gift Bag
2.  Intermediate Winner:  Nail Gift Bag
3.  Advanced Winner:       Nail Gift Bag

Each contestant will determine which level in which they want to compete.  This is their choice since they will be able to determine best which level they are.   I will show a manicure that will best match up with the level in which they choose to compete.  More instructions to come on Thursday!

Social Media: Protecting Your Children and Teens Online

We all need to do more of this and less of social media!

My sons are grown men and they have jobs and spend very little time on social media for which I am very glad.

When my niece became old enough to use social media my sister was in charge of how much time and where online she went.  Because of this, my niece was able to graduate with honors and take honor classes in her first 2 years of college (so far, she is keeping up with her grades).   I am so proud of the way that she kept on her with her daughter's online time.  My sister made a deal with my niece when she wanted to join FaceBook (which I introduced them too).   They were in the same groups together and my sister had to be her friend.

My sister didn't sit there and watch her moves on the computer.  But every so often she would check her daughter's online activity and they would talk about it together.  My niece mostly kept involved with her friends from high school online.

Now what I'm going to say (speaking as a parent) may upset you but this is only my opinion based on experience.  If you are not in charge of your child's (teen's) online time, you are not setting the right tone with their involvement in social media.

Too many "mommy bloggers" put their kids on the iPad or other computer or phone and allow unsupervised time because they are too busy trying to make money and friends online.  I know this as a fact because I'm in the groups with the "mommy bloggers" since I am a Mom Blogger myself.   They are on there for hours chatting away and admit to others that they aren't in charge of what their child is doing.  I see how much time they put into blogging and less of mommying.

I would say that more emphasis needs to be on your child (while they are children to 18) and less on the computer.  We see in the news how many kids are suicidal and how many go through with it because of bullying online.   This month is anti bullying month, and now is the perfect time to make a promise to your child (if you aren't doing this already) that they are #1 and the computer is number whatever.

One of the most important things we can do to help our children is to build solid relationships that allow for frequent back and forth conversations instead of one way lectures. Ongoing discussions are helpful because social media and technology evolve too rapidly for a couple of conversations to make a dent.
We must educate ourselves and stay abreast of technology trends, issues and solutions so we are able to provide intelligent and helpful input for our children.

Empowering our kids by letting them teach us something new can enhance relationships, facilitate interactive discussions and help protect them in the process. Using the same social media platforms they use enhances our ability to provide meaningful and constructive suggestions and can allow us to monitor them too.

Here are some great places to get help from others who are in this same situation:

Many of these articles are saying what I believe and many of them go into deeper topics of protecting your children online.
If you are a grandparent, you might want to share this article with them.  Also, don't be afraid to tell your adult children what to be careful of online.

The impact of social media on children and youth today

If you watch the recent news and see your children or other people's children on social media, you get a good look at what is influencing your child's life.

I was a teacher for 17 years and that was about 15 years ago. The children in my classes were mostly Middle School age and they weren't so hard to teach as the children I see making the news and my friends who are teachers describe.

If I could do it, I would like to come back to the schools and teach the Random Acts of Kindness lessons (as a volunteer in the classroom of other teachers.)

I think this new "me" generation is greatly affected by Social Media and that it can be a bad thing for SOME children. I am grieving for children who take their lives due to bullying.  I have spoken about bullying in this blog and since this month is focusing on anti-bullying I will continue to do so.   You can read the first article that I wrote about this just 2 years ago here:
conversationswithcarolyn.blogspot.com/2011/09/stop-school-bullying.html

I'm also surprised at the stories in the news about the effects of Social Media on children today:

Social Networking’s Good and Bad Impacts on Kids

Social Media and Its Effect on Children: The Interception

Image from the Child Study Center

From the "Anti-Social Networking: How do texting and social media affect our children?" I'd like to point out the following information from their surveys:

How much are kids using media?

  • The total amount of media use by youth ages 8 to 18 averages 6-plus hours a day—more than any other activity.
  • The amount of use has increased significantly, up from 4-plus hours in the last five years.
  • Eighty percent of adolescents possess at least one form of media access.
  • There is extensive multi-tasking associated with media use (instant messaging while doing homework and listening to music on an mp3 player, for example).
  • Of particular concern is the amount of TV kids consume. From 2004 to 2009, television and video use averaged three to five hours per day, peaking between the ages of 11 and 14, a crucial period for kids' social development.
  • Fifty-four percent of teens send text messages, and one third of teens send more than 100 text messages per day.
  • One third talk face-to-face with friends, around the same percentage that talk on cell phones (38 percent) and land lines (30 percent).
  • Twenty-four percent communicate with friends via instant messages.
  • Twenty-five percent contact friends via social networking sites.
  • Eleven percent use e-mail.

How does media use affect kids' development?

Because texting, instant messaging, and social networking sites like Facebook are still comparatively new, research is not really available yet on their long-term effects. But we can extrapolate a certain amount from research on the effects of TV and video games on children's development.

  • Among preschoolers, more time spent watching TV has been shown to have a negative impact on attention, academic performance, and adjustment in elementary school and middle school.
  • Increases in media use are associated with reduced grades; only 23 percent of "light" users averaged C's or worse, as compared with 47 percent of "heavy" users.
  • Kids who see more TV learn to read later and slower.
Violent and sexual content, in both TV and video games, bring their own concerns. Increased exposure to violence has been proven to result in:

  • More aggressive behavior
  • More aggressive thoughts
  • More angry feelings
  • Less empathy
  • Fewer helping behaviors
  • Increases in fear
Furthermore, this content tends to be:

  • Unrealistic: in 73 percent of instances there is no punishment, and only 16 percent of programs show any negative consequences to violent behavior.
  • Frequent in children's programming. Even when kids are watching "family friendly" shows like "Sponge Bob," there is an average 25 acts of violence per TV-viewing session.
Sexualized content, which appears frequently in certain video games and often includes sexualized violence, is associated with:

  • Poor attitudes towards women
  • An increase in rape myth acceptance–"They asked for it."
  • Increases in violence against women
In terms of how this information might extend to the use of other social media:

  • Participation for long periods of time can have a negative effect on basic cognitive processes.
  • Overuse can have a negative impact on attention skills.
  • The content of the information can have an effect on emotions and behavior.
Furthermore, the actions that are discussed, encouraged, and practiced in interactive media are likely to become stronger and more frequent. If kids practice violent interactions, they are likely to get better at them; the U.S. Armed Forces uses video games as part of training for combat.

[...]

What parents can do

There are a number of things parents can and should do to stave off potential negative consequences of social media.

  • Learn more about social media, either from your children (they are digital natives, we are digital immigrants) or by taking a class.
  • Except in extreme circumstances, try to find a way to allow your child to participate in social media. If they say they'll be left out socially if you restrict their access altogether, they're probably right.
  • Join your child's social networks and "friend" them. While it may increase parent-child conflict, you need to know the substance of what your child is saying and doing on these sites and confront them about inappropriate behavior. Thirty-nine percent of parents report having friended their teen on a social networking site.
  • Teach kids to stop and really think before responding to text messages or comments made on social media.
  • Set limits. Use software that turns the computer off after a certain number of hours and/or tracks online activity.
  • Get your children's passwords. Again, online privacy from parents is not an inalienable right. A Facebook page is not a diary, kept under the bed under lock and key. If friends and friends-of-friends can see it, Mom and Dad need to be able to as well.
  • Don't let kids charge phones or laptops in their bedrooms, and don't let them have these devices in their rooms overnight. Your teen should not be on Facebook or replying to text messages instead of sleeping.
  • If possible, limit the presence of cell phones and computers in kids' bedrooms during all hours of the day. Find a place in your home that is quiet enough for homework, but still public.
  • Model good behavior. If you are checking your BlackBerry or iPhone at the dinner table or on family vacations, how can you expect your children to unplug? Make time for family time. Surf the Web together, and share other activities as well.
  • If kids go a day (or several) without being online, their world will not come to an end (that goes for you, too).
  • Especially for younger kids, play (the kind that doesn't involve computers) is important. Video games are among the most popular activities when boys get together, and Facebook and other social networking sites are popular with girls. Force kids to play outside or engage in other types of activities if necessary: "You can play the video game after you've played outside for half an hour."
  • Talk with kids about what is and isn't appropriate to post online. There is definitely such a thing as "oversharing"! Just because kids' friends are posting certain photos or information doesn't mean it's a good idea.
  • Keep social networking in its place. Make sure your kids eat well, sleep well, and exercise.Teach and model social skills and empathy.
  • Know the content your child is consuming. Watch the YouTube videos, look at their friends' Facebook page if you have access, play the video games they play.
  • Discuss content viewed online (and this goes for TV, video games, movies, music videos, etc.). Does it agree with your values? Is it accurate and/or realistic? How do you think it may affect the behavior and emotions of people who see it?
  • Confront your kids about Facebook or other social media posts you feel are inappropriate, from them or their friends.
  • Remind kids not to post photos or content that could help strangers find them in the real world, such as photos in school uniforms or displaying school names or logos. Make sure your child limits access to Facebook pages and other social media to people your child specifically accepts as "friends," and tell them not to accept friend requests from strangers.

Anti-Social Networking: How do texting and social media affect our children? Parents' questions and answers from CSC clinicians at the Nightingale-Bamford School

Anti-Social Networking: How do texting and social media affect our children? A panel discussion by CSC clinicians at the Nightingale-Bamford School

I constantly see children (including one out of 2 of mine who are grown men now) come back and thank you for the positive words of encouragement to them when they were growing up.  And then if I were to only watch the Dr. Phil Show, I would think that all kids and their parents are bad people in need of his wisdom.  I think that when I see them that it's so great that he's able to impact one life at a time.

What is your feeling about social media impacting children and youth since they were first able to use it?   Have you seen the incline of bullying and other problem areas that I see?  If not, what do you observe and do you have any suggestions to the rest of my readers as to what you would advise in regard to this topic?

Tomorrow I will continue with this topic.  Stay tuned!

Google Sets Plan to Sell Users’ Endorsements (in other words, you should read this before it's too late)

The NY Times article describes it best:

SAN FRANCISCO — Google, following in Facebook’s footsteps, wants to sell users’ endorsements to marketers to help them hawk their wares.

On Friday, Google announced an update to its terms of service that allows the company to include adult users’ names, photos and comments in ads shown across the Web, based on ratings, reviews and posts they have made on Google Plus and other Google services like YouTube.

When the new ad policy goes live Nov. 11, Google will be able to show what the company calls shared endorsements on Google sites and across the Web, on the more than two million sites in Google’s display advertising network, which are viewed by an estimated one billion people.

If a user follows a bakery on Google Plus or gives an album four stars on the Google Play music service, for instance, that person’s name, photo and endorsement could show up in ads for that bakery or album.

Google said it would give users the chance to opt out of being included in the new endorsements, and people under the age of 18 will automatically be excluded.

I have a lump in my breast: foods to eat

I am fully aware that one of my problems right now is WEIGHT.  I'm over-weight.  There's an endless cycle for me with weight and healthy eating.   I'm mostly eating right.  But I have one down-fall and that is SUGAR.

My husband has this same yearning.  So we bought all this candy (for Christmas baked goods) and stored it downstairs in the garage on the food shelves.  Well I couldn't hold out any longer and asked John to bring up some kind that he likes and something I like and put it in the freezer.  It's gone!

I buy sugarless candy from http://www.nuts.com but even they warn that it gives you gas and then diarrhea.  And so it does.  So I'm learning to eat less sugarless candy and keep my paws off the Halloween candy.

Here are some foods that are encouraged to be eaten to prevent breast cancer.  These foods are GOOD foods to be eaten all the time.  The explanation given for each food item tells you why the food item is good for you to take in regards to breast cancer.

1. Broccoli:  Sulforaphane—a compound in broccoli—reduced the number of breast cancer stem cells (which cause cancer spread and recurrence) in mice, according to research from the University of Michigan.

(Ok, we're talking mice again but we know that broccoli is good for us!)  I love broccoli and try to eat it fresh and cooked (there are reasons that I don't eat raw veggies) and steamed with some spice on it.

2. Salmon:  Taking fish-oil supplements for at least 10 years can shrink your risk of ductal carcinoma, the most common type of breast cancer, according to a study in Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention. It’s thought that the omega-3 fats in fish oil reduce inflammation, which may contribute to breast cancer. But you can skip the supplement aisle, say the study’s researchers, and eat about 8 ounces of oily fish (salmon, sardines, tuna) a week.

This is one way to eat it and it's super nutritional:   http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=recipe&dbid=83

My husband John, has been cooking our salmon, once a week, for a couple of years now.  He has three excellent ways to make it.  One way is with black beans.  This is the closest recipe to the one we have:  http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/emeril-lagasse/pan-seared-salmon-with-black-bean-relish-recipe/index.html

3. Olive Oil:  Another reason to reach for extra-virgin olive oil: when researchers in Barcelona gave rats with breast cancer a diet in which fat came predominantly from extra-virgin olive oil (versus corn oil), they found that the olive oil’s antioxidants and oleic acid (a mono-unsaturated fat) quelled growth of malignant cells.

We cook everything in olive oil and use olive oil spray.  The only time that we don't use olive oil is in baking and we use coconut oil or sometimes canola.

4. Parsley:  University of Missouri scientists found that this herb can actually inhibit cancer-cell growth. Animals that were given apigenin, a compound abundant in parsley (and in celery), boosted their resistance to developing cancerous tumors. Experts recommend adding a couple pinches of minced fresh parsley to your dishes daily.

We use a lot of parsley because we grow it ourselves and use  it in cooking and especially in our pesto.  We share this with our neighbors.

5. Coffee:  Drinking about two 12-ounce coffees a day may lower your risk of an aggressive form of breast cancer, says a May 2011 study in Breast Cancer Research. “One possibility is that coffee’s antioxidants protect cells from damage that can lead to cancer,” says study author Jingmei Li, Ph.D. More research is needed, so don’t up your intake based on these findings just yet.

I love tasting various coffees but my husband is boring (just kidding) and only loves his Folgers.  So I have to work hard in my reviewing to find one of those one cup makers so I can try different coffee on my own.

6.  Plums & Peaches:  Researchers at Texas A&M recently found that plums and peaches have antioxidant levels to rival “superfood” blueberries—and that they contain two types of polyphenols (antioxidants) that may help kill breast cancer cells while leaving healthy cells intact. This is good news, as 180,000 new cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year and traditional treatments often harm healthy cells. —Kerri-Ann Kennings, M.S., R.D., Associate Nutrition Editor

Both of these I love very much, especially plums!  I love making plum and peach cobbler but with a low calorie recipe.

7.  Beans: According to a new report, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, upping your fiber intake may help lower your risk of breast cancer—and the more you eat, the more your risk decreases. The researchers found that for every 10 grams of fiber a woman added to her daily diet, her risk of breast cancer decreased by 7 percent. That’s about a 1/2 to one cup of beans, depending on the variety. Other foods packed with fiber include barley, bulgur, lentils, peas, artichokes, dates and raspberries. —Brierley Wright, M.S., R.D., Nutrition Editor

My husband and I make baked beans with lots of various kinds of beans and then can and freeze the batch in the freezer to eat until we run out (in the fall and winter mostly) and then we make them again.  Making them yourself by soaking the beans and then following the instructions is the best!  Here is such a recipe:   http://www.bhg.com/recipes/how-to/cooking-basics/how-to-make-baked-beans/

8.  Walnuts:  Recent research in the journal Nutrition and Cancer suggests walnuts may thwart the growth of breast cancer. In a study out of Marshall University School of Medicine in West Virginia, researchers substituted the equivalent of two ounces of walnuts per day into the diet of one group of mice; the other group was fed a calorically equivalent, but walnut-free, diet. After 34 days, the growth rate of tumors in the walnut eaters was half that of the mice who ate no walnuts.

Experts think walnuts’ anti-inflammatory properties—which could come from the omega-3 fat alpha-linolenic acid, phytosterols or antioxidants—may give them their tumor-fighting potential. One caveat: the study dose of two ounces supplies 370 calories. Still, “walnuts can be part of a healthy diet that can reduce your risk for cancer,” says lead researcher Elaine Hardman, Ph. D. —Brierley Wright, M.S., R.D., Nutrition Editor

We eat a lot of walnuts!  From breakfast through a night time snack.  At breakfast I love a handful before we eat.  In the gym I found out from a trainer that you should be eating a protein within the first 30 minutes of waking up.  So I grab a handful to eat slowly while my coffee is cooling down.   At lunch I like to put them on fish or other meals, and the same for my small dinner.  I usually have yogurt with fruit and walnuts or a combination of nuts for dinner.

I have a lump in my breast

I found the lump while doing a self exam.

I called the Dr. and made an appointment for Tuesday next week.  What I am doing while waiting for this appointment is being active!  Trying to take my mind off of it, but at night when I'm watching tv in bed I'm constantly feeling it and trying to figure out what it might be.  So I turned to Susan Kohman:

If you feel a lump in your breast, do not panic. Most lumps are not breast cancer, but something less serious, like a benign breast condition (more on benign breast conditions).
Some lumps will go away on their own. In younger women, lumps are often related to menstrual periods and will go away by the end of the cycle. However, if you find a lump, it is best to see your health care provider to be sure.

Breast lumps or lumpiness

Many women’s breasts feel lumpy. Breast tissue naturally has a bumpy texture that varies from one woman to another. For some women, the lumpiness is more pronounced than for others. In most cases, this lumpiness is no cause to worry. If the lumpiness can be felt throughout the breast and feels like your other breast, it is likely just normal breast tissue.
Lumps that feel harder or different from the rest of the breast tissue (or the tissue of the other breast) or that feel like a change are a concern. This type of lump is more likely to be breast cancer, though some benign breast conditions (such as cysts and fibroadenomas) can cause similar changes. See your health care provider if you:
  • Find a new lump or change that feels different from the rest of your breast
  • Find a new lump or change that feels different from your other breast
  • Feel something that is different from what you felt before
If you are unsure whether you should have a lump checked, it is best to see your provider. Although a lump may be nothing to worry about, you will have the peace of mind it has been checked.
Learn more about benign breast conditions.

Nipple discharge

Liquid leaking from your nipple (nipple discharge) can be troubling, but it is rarely a sign of breast cancer. Discharge can be your body's natural reaction when the nipple is squeezed. However, the following may be signs of a more serious condition, such as breast cancer:
  • Discharge occurs without squeezing the nipple
  • Discharge occurs in only one breast
  • Discharge has blood in it
  • Discharge is clear (not milky)
Nipple discharge can also be caused by an infection or other condition that needs medical treatment. For these reasons, if you have any nipple discharge, see your health care provider.

Other changes in the breasts

You may see or feel other changes in your breasts. See your health care provider if you notice any of these warning signs of breast cancer (see pictures) [52-55]:
  • Lump, hard knot or thickening inside the breast or underarm area
  • Swelling, warmth, redness or darkening of the breast
  • Change in the size or shape of the breast
  • Dimpling or puckering of the skin
  • Itchy, scaly sore or rash on the nipple
  • Pulling in of your nipple or other parts of the breast
  • Nipple discharge that starts suddenly
  • New pain in one spot that doesn't go away
Pain in your breasts may be related to your menstrual period. However, if the pain does not go away, don't ignore it. Although pain is rarely a sign of breast cancer, it is best to see your provider.

MAYBE....  it's just a soft lump.  I am 53... gone through the change of life and so there are some things that I can rule out.  According to the chart above I don't have any of those symptoms, it's just a soft-hard lump and since I have cysts on my one ovary (they took the other one during my hysterectomy because of all the fibroids on it) I am thinking that this could be a cyst.

Anyway, I am trying to quiet the mind, work on my Scentsy business, keep praying and trusting in God,  play with my dog and hopefully going to a movie tomorrow with my husband.  I will also work out my thoughts by blogging about it and learning and sharing this information that I have always known about, it just never needed to be a concern for me before now.

Tomorrow I will talk about there being no concern about the diet (way of life) for me.  My diet is great!

I am having trouble controlling my thoughts and my mouth right now.  I think it's because I keep adding things to do to my platter and it's overflowing.

He has previously served on the faculty of Duke University Medical Center and the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston. Gentry has conducted training seminars for lay and professional audiences throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe. He has also served as a consultant to major industry, where he specializes in conflict management, team building, and health promotion. Articles referring to Dr. Gentry’s work on anger regularly appear in a variety of contemporary magazines, and he is frequently interviewed on radio and television for insights into how to create and maintain an anger-free life. He is the author of two earlier self-help books on anger: ANGER-FREE: Ten Basic Steps to Managing Your Anger (Quill, 2000) and When Someone You Love Is Angry (Berkley, 2004)

Here's a great CHEAT SHEET to help you learn the principles of the book:  http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/anger-management-for-dummies-cheat-sheet.html

I am trying a breathing practice that has recently been shared with me and others from my friend,  Peggy Bell Nolan "Today we are Mastering the Art of Self-Control. I hope you stop by and share how you've been able to practice self-control or if you haven't, the five tips I have may help you learn to master it! http://thestepmomstoolbox.com/mastering-self-control/ "

I've also committed this to God and am praying more often.  I know that there is only so much we can do to control our hormones, only so much we can get from life coaches and therapists and even our own relationship with God.  We take this in (as I'm doing now with the reading) and then put to practice what we are learning.
